The 7,000-ton steamship Samtampa (built 1943), constructed by New England Shipbuilding in Maine and one of the US’ so-called Liberty Ships, was wrecked while attempting to ride out a severe gale off Sker Point, Porthcawl, on 23 April 1947 with the loss of its entire crew of 39. Managed by Houlder Bros on behalf of the British Crown, it was on its way from Middlesbrough to Newport.
