The London-based International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has submitted a paper to the IMO’s legal committee, which meets this month, suggesting improvements to the database of abandonment cases, which it hopes will help the industry come to a clearer understanding of the extent of the problem and help resolve cases.

The recent adoption of measures that make insurance provision protecting seafarers from abandonment mandatory has not entirely solved the problem, the ICS suggests in its paper.

“Whilst
