The proposal was tabled at the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s subcommittee on safety of navigation, communication and search and rescue (NCSR).
IMO member states backed the proposal and FleetBroadband will now be assessed by the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), while the application is to be discussed at the IMO’s decision-making maritime safety committee (MSC).
Inmarsat is currently the only provider of GMDSS satellite services and does so through its Inmarsat C system.
