K Line associate director Keiji Tomoda has come out with a strong defence of the positive role Asian shipowners are playing in promoting higher safety and environmental recycling standards across the globe.

His comments come as the recycling debate on standards seems focused on the negative consequences of upcoming regional European Union (EU) regulations.

The EU move, which in effect does not recognise beaching yards, is viewed as going against the enforcement of a unified International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed global standard known as the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC).
