Regular maritime transport in the Arctic may be relatively new but it is fast becoming an important factor on the agendas of the international bodies working towards co-operation, research, regulation and protection of the region.

Key among these is the Arctic Council, an intergovernmental advisory body set up 21 years ago on the initiative of Finland to find ways to forge useful co-operative links between states in the region.
