Technical difficulties in fitting ballast water treatment systems to topside tanks in bulkers could be enough to marginalise “thousands” of quality vessels and lead to premature scrapping, according to dry bulk industry association Intercargo.

While some observers might think the early disappearance of tonnage in a depressed market would be cause for celebration, Intercargo warns it would come with the heavy environmental cost of demolishing and replacing what are in many cases young high-quality vessels.
