The ITF fears it may be seeing the beginnings of a growing problem as

malaria-carrying mosquitos prove increasingly resistant to existing

medicines.



ITF officials were alerted to the potential problem after they noticed a

sharp increase this year in the number of compensation claims they

received from families of crew members who had died from malaria.



The organization has processed only a handful of such claims in recent

years, as it usually only gets involved in such cases when either a

shipowner or P&I club refuses to pay out compensation.
