The deal has gone to Signal International and involves construction of a 15,000-cubic-feet (cbf)-capacity trailing-suction-hopper barge and 14,000-bhp tug.

Signal will design and build the dredge at its facility in Orange, Texas, based on Great Lakes’ performance specifications.

Great Lakes president of dredging operations Dave Simonelli claims the new dredge is a “game changer” in the competitive marketplace.

Following delivery in the second quarter of 2014, the two units will operate as an articulated tug and barge (ATB) unit.
