The AP Moller-Maersk chief blamed the near 40% retreat in the division’s bottom line on an unusually weak summer North Sea spot market.

Speaking on a conference call after the Danish behemoth reported its second-quarter numbers this week, he dismissed the weak rates on offer in the benchmark market as “something which happens once in a while”.

He added: “We maintain a high level of activity in Brazil and West Africa.
