Six Lloyd’s of London syndicates have won a London appeal-court ruling that will help them defend claims arising from a 2008 Philippine ferry tragedy, which claimed hundreds of lives.

The 23,824-gt Princess of the Stars (built 1984) sailed from Manila into typhoon Frank and capsized with the loss of at least 500 lives and the vessel’s cargo.

The legal battle in London centred on an alleged breach of an insurance warranty that the vessel “shall not sail or put out of a sheltered port when there is a typhoon or storm warning” or when the voyage was within the path of such a weather system.
