Brazilian mining giant Vale is pondering the possibilities of LNG to power its next generation of Valemax bulkers.

Vale director of shipping Gurinder Singh says his company is serious about cutting its greenhouse-gas emissions and is looking closely at using LNG to fuel its bulkers in the future.

Singh, speaking at the Trade­Winds Smart Shipping conference in Singapore, says the Valemax bulker design is well suited for LNG-powered engines as it has sufficient void space capacity to install LNG tanks that would give enough range for the ship to make an entire roundtrip between the company’s loading terminal and Brazil and its distant customers in Northern Asia.
