The strategic refleeting plan calls for two new Jones Act vessels to be constructed in the next three to five years to replace and retire existing and older vessels, according to a recent presentation by Matson chief executive Matt Cox. It is understood the ships will be in the region of 2,600 teu.
At around $200m each, the US-flag pair will be more expensive than the 18,000-teu vessels being built in South Korea for Denmark’s Maersk Line.
