BP Shipping is tapping up shipbuilders for a series of up to 30 medium-range (MR) tanker newbuildings worth close to $1bn — just weeks after signing up to an expensive raft of larger tonnage.
Industry sources say the energy major has approached around four South Korean shipyards directly for price quotations. Initial discussions are said to have centred on 10 high-specification, 50,000-dwt vessels, with the possibility of two options, each for a series of 10 more ships.
