The proud Ligurian port and birthplace of Columbus, Genoa has sadly taken quite a beating in recent years, not only due to steady de-industrialisation. What has been perhaps worse for locals was the rise of Naples as a more significant shipowning centre — at least that was the case before the crash.
Revival of the Genoa’s elegant and historic centre is now well underway, however, with the old port area transformed into a cultural and tourist hotspot.
