Egyptian authorities were not wrong to downplay the machine gun and rocket launcher attack on a Cosco boxship in the Suez Canal last weekend. Although dramatic, the attack on the 10,062-teu Cosco Asia (built 2007) reportedly damaged neither the ship nor its cargo, while trade along the vital waterway was not materially disrupted.
For the attackers, the outcome may not have been so benign.
