In a win for shipowners, a Canadian judge has ruled that the nation’s law bars arrests of multiple sisterships owned by the same registered owner.

But Westshore Terminals —which is pursuing CAD 60m ($54.4m) in claims against Japan’s Tokei Kaiun — has already filed an appeal.

If the decision by federal court judge Justice Elizabeth Heneghan survives the appeal, the ruling could settle a question in the country’s maritime law that has until now gone unanswered.
