Yangzhou-based Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding is entering the niche for handysize stainless-steel chemical tankers on the back of Peter Georgiopoulos’s hefty investment in the sector.

The shipyard, which has been focusing on small gas ships — including LNG carriers — is set to construct up to 10 newbuildings for the New York-based owner.

Informed sources say Georgiopoulos’s newly formed company, Chemical Transport Co, has firmed up a deal for five firm 25,000-dwt vessels, plus five options, at the state-owned yard.
