Inmarsat will seek approval from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) next year to deliver safety and navigational services via modern Internet-based computer systems.
The mobile satellite communications company, which has supplied 44,000 of its FleetBroadband data systems to vessels, has been developing ways to provide text-message and voice-based distress, safety and navigational services through the newer network over the past two years.
