According to shipping-ministry officials, the government awarded licences to 32 companies in 2011 to trade along the country’s coast and inland waterways by April this year, in a scheme aimed to increase coastal traffic and ease congestion on roads and railways.

They include state-owned Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corp (BIWTC) as well private outfits such as MR Global, Meer & Islam Enterprise, Bancan Shipping, Navstar Shipping Ltd, Blue Water Shipping and Aryan Traders.
