The Indian government has forced state-owned Gail (India) to embrace its new policy of promoting local manufacturing so domestic yards can secure LNG newbuilding contracts.

Sources close to the Indian petroleum ministry say the government has directed Gail to adopt the new National Manufacturing Policy (NMP) and 12th five-year plan aimed at promoting domestic shipbuilding.

The ministry wants the company to ensure that tender conditions enable local yards to compete for the gas major’s proposed LNG newbuildings.
