The protection-and-indemnity (P&I) clubs are edging towards providing cover for the unpaid wages of abandoned seafarers in a major shift from covering shipping accidents to commercial liabilities.
The question of whether cover should be provided for the unpaid wage provisions of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) will be determined by the shipowner directors of the 13 International Group P&I clubs but it seems likely there will be a decision in favour.
