The Urenda family’s decision to abandon container shipping and sell CCNI’s liner operations to rival Hamburg Sud marks a U-turn that raises questions for the future of all smaller liner operators.

The Chilean owners of CCNI had been seeking a partner before changing tack and accepting a German offer, which puts a $160m price tag on their container shipping activities.

It puts paid to more than 80 years of the CCNI brand, as well as 33 years during which the Urendas had run South America’s second-largest liner operator.
