Nick Sloane is about to head back to South Africa for a well-deserved rest after completing his role as chief salvage master of the Costa Concordia wreck removal, the largest project of its kind ever undertaken.

“We’ll see if they [the family] still recognise me,” he joked speaking to TradeWinds by phone as he returned to Giglio Island from Genoa, where he recently delivered the wreck, to sign off the job, which has been on his mind day and night for the past 30 months.

The
