Koji Sekimizu’s unexpected and sudden decision to step down as secretary-general of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) at the end of 2015 has caught member states by surprise, with the race now on to find a suitable candidate to replace him by next June’s election.

Sekimizu was widely expected to carry on for another term but decided last week that he cannot continue to head up the IMO and care for his wife, who has been seriously ill for some time.
