The young SUNY Maritime College graduate was by then already gathering momentum in a New York shipping career, and had worked in dry bulk chartering at International Shipholding Corp, as well as in chemical transport. His experience back home had included a stint with Chinese state-owned giant Sinochem, which would later become a shipowning joint-venture partner of Stolt, but at that particular moment, a return to the Chinese shipping scene was not part of Qu’s plans.
