Ahrenkiel Steamship has added two containerships to its portfolio and a partnership with US investors could soon lead to more.

The Hamburg-based shipping operation has acquired two sub-panamaxes by taking over loans on the vessels.

The 1,876-teu Vega and Aries (both built 2001) have been handed over from Alpha Ship — the Bremen-based manager of a dwindling fleet of KG (limited partnership) containerships — which was unable or unwilling to put more equity into them, say German sources.
