The prospective order would more than double the number of large containerships on order for G6 members — from 20 vessels to 44 — and decrease slot costs by significantly increasing the average size of ships.

Those are key elements in the existential struggle of lines battling to cope with a decade-long downward spiral of freight rates.

As of July, the G6 members had 20 ships over 10,000 teu on order for 238,200 teu, with an average vessel size of 11,910 teu, according to Drewry figures.
