A “perfect storm” of negative trends may not have blown away DryShips’ hopes of refinancing $700m in convertible notes but it has left management picking through the ruins of a failed bond offering and looking for shelter.

“I’m surprised they waited this long to refinance,” said Andrew Casella, an analyst with Imperial Capital.

“You have to take access to capital markets when they’re available, not when you want to use them.
