German shipowner Briese Schiffahrt is pushing for changes to laws on the repatriation of stowaways after a tragic loss of a life.
The Leer-based owner has been galvanised by efforts to repatriate a Nigerian stowaway who jumped overboard on 3 October while the 4,900-dwt multipurpose (MPP) vessel Skaftafell (built 1997) was in Rotterdam.
Initial Dutch reports suggested that the stowaway had been discovered by crew in the afternoon while the vessel was anchored off the Hook of Holland.
