SAL has been talking about ordering more ships for several years but not done so to date. Justin Archard, the company’s Singapore-based managing director for Asia Pacific and Oceania, says the reasons for this are twofold.

Archard acknowledges that demand is increasing and concedes that newbuildings will inevitably come. But he notes that the heavylift market is in a state of transition and SAL prefers to wait until a clearer picture emerges on the scope of future lift sizes before it places orders for new tonnage.
