Japan Marine United (JMU) has won an order for two 14,000-gt, 620-passenger capacity ropaxes from compatriot MOL Ferries.

The two high-specification, 24-knot ferries will be built to a high-efficiency design employing a hybrid propulsion system and contra-rotating propeller. No price has been given for the contract, which secures the return of Japan’s largest yard to the passengership market.

JMU, formed in 2010 through the merger of Universal Shipbuilding and IHI Marine United, says it will build the vessels at its Isogo yard in Yokohama, with delivery scheduled for 2017.
