Kirby Corp has challenged Cleopatra Shipping Agency’s efforts to cap its liability in the litigation over a Texas collision and oil spill.

The Houston tug-and-barge giant has opposed efforts by Athens-based Cleopatra to seek the same legal shield afforded to shipowners in US casualty lawsuits.

Kirby’s move is the latest salvo in a multi-pronged courtroom dispute over the March collision between the 43,200-dwt Summer Wind (built 1995) and one of two barges being towed by Kirby tug Miss Susan in a busy junction of the Houston Ship Channel.
