South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has won the dubious job of building the world’s first LNG carriers to be equipped with state utility Korea Gas Corp (Kogas)’s in-house designed KC-1 cargo containment system.

The system, originally designed by Kogas as a rival to French designer GTT’s membrane-type version, will be used on two 174,000-cbm vessels to be ordered by South Korea’s SK Shipping against long-term time-charter deals to Kogas following the utility’s recent newbuilding tender.
