Shipowners offering in LNG carrier tonnage to energy major Shell are being linked to some eye-wateringly low rates for five-year charter deals.

Brokers and companies following the business name a Greek shipowner as putting its dual-fuel diesel-electric vessel in at a bareboat charter rate of $49,000 per day, equating to a time charter daily rate of around $67,000.

Another larger Greek owner is rumoured to be offering M-type, electronically controlled gas-injection (ME-GI) LNG newbuildings at below $52,000 per day on a bareboat basis, which brokers say equates to a similar $67,000-per-day time-charter rate.
