Vadodara-based Gujarat State Electricity Corp Ltd (GSECL) is looking to import five million tonnes of thermal coal annually on a cost, insurance and freight (CIF) basis for up to 20 years, starting from next year. Officials at the utility confirm the import plan but decline to place a value on the business. However, sources tell TradeWinds that it is expected to be worth around $350m per year, including shipping and inland transport costs, or around $7bn for the entire 20-year period.
