Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is promising further support for the national shipbuilding industry ahead of a snap general election called for 14 December.

Abe’s so-called public promise on regional economic regeneration listed the shipbuilding industry among the three main sectors that are crucial to supporting growth in the country’s outlying industrial heartlands. More than 80% of Japan’s shipbuilding industry is located in south west the country, mostly around the Inland Sea and the island of Shikoku.
