At the other end of the spectrum from the traditional owners are the new shipping operations that have sprung up in the depth of the crisis, backed by money coming from other commercial sectors such as mining, media and textiles.
Two such companies that have built up fleets of more than 20 vessels each are Densa Shipping and Ciner Shipping.
Members of the influential Sabanci family established Densa in 2009.
