Should the chief executive of a shipping company also be the chairman of its board?

The question arose again when New York’s Eagle Bulk Shipping quietly filed a document with US securities regulators last month that effectively ended Sophocles Zoullas’s decade-long run as a two-hat leader. He remains chief executive but yielded to financier Paul Leand as chairman.

While some chatter centred on Oaktree Capital Management flexing its muscles as Eagle’s new majority owner, management described a unanimous agreement that a split leadership reflected best practice in corporate governance.
