Europe is known to have some of the most stringent environmental laws on the planet. So it came as no surprise when the European Union (EU) was among the first to propose legislation to reduce the emissions created by commercial shipping.

The EU’s executive body, the European Commission, has proposed a scheme to monitor, report and verify (MRV) carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions that, if approved, will become law in July and, from 2018, require monitoring and annual reporting for vessels exceeding 5,000 gt.

Shipowners
