US authorities could step up enforcement measures and pursue stiffer penalties as emissions regulations tighten across the nation’s coasts, according to shipping lawyers and communications from authorities.

The rules, which under Marpol Annex VI will limit sulphur content in marine fuels to just 0.1% from the current 1%, come into force in January in the North American and US Caribbean emission control areas (ECAs).
