Researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa announced the discovery of the “ghost ship” some 600 metres underwater and 30 kilometres (18.75 miles) off the island of Oahu.

The 638-gt Dickenson was found last year as part of a maritime heritage submersible mission but, as is common when shipwrecks are located, announcement of its discovery was delayed.

Hans Van Tilburg of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s marine sanctuaries office said the ship is like a “museum exhibit resting in the darkness”.
