The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has announced improved minimum standards for containership structural strength in what is the start of more extensive work into boxship safety.

The new requirements, which come 18 months after the 8,110-teu MOL Comfort (built 2008) broke in half and then sank in the middle of the Indian Ocean, are intended to restore confidence in the structural integrity of the latest generation of post-panamax containerships.
