Ports need to be “future proofed” to face the challenge of a new generation of containerships, a UN agency has warned.

It suggests that ports need not necessarily build longer container berths but must construct deeper access channels, wider turning basins, more pilotage facilities, strengthened quays, larger storage areas and more sophisticated terminal operating systems.

Traditionally, container cranes were designed to serve vessels 13 cells wide but post-panamaxes ordered since 1988 needed cranes with greater reach of up to 18 boxes.

“The
