Ballast-water problems are emerging as the most likely cause for the loss of control that led to the deliberate grounding of the 52,000-gross-ton (gt) car carrier Hoegh Osaka (built 2006) outside Southampton on 3 January.

But experts believe there are other safety concerns with car carriers that go beyond the stability and structural issues that have been highlighted so far.
