Tougher emissions regulations are creating new technology markets as owners seek cheaper and more practical ways of compliance in regulated seaways.

Owners were expected to simply turn to low-sulphur distillates to comply with the introduction of a 0.1% sulphur limit in the North Sea, Baltic and North America emission control areas (ECAs) from January this year.

But, while the majority have opted for distillates, the regulation has also prompted the development of new heavy fuels and seen more and more ships turn to scrubber technology and LNG.
