The US has imposed a trade embargo against Cuba since 1960. On 17 December 2014, US president Barack Obama announced to the global community that he wanted to normalise the relationship between the two countries. While the shipping industry is eager to explore opportunities for trade with Cuba without the risk of having their respective vessels blocked from entering US waters for 180 days, the industry must proceed with caution.
