Delhi last week endorsed a fresh set of guidelines to allow the use of re-rolled steel from local recyclers to build small inland and coastal vessels, barges and port tugs.

Shipping-ministry officials say the re-rolled steel will be certified by various regulatory authorities following stringent quality checks to validate sourcing and processing methods.

Exemptions made

The government has also exempted shiprepair yards from mandatory registration with national maritime regulator, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).
