Leading classification societies are competing on how much they can save owners on fuel while also ensuring the safety of the latest design of containerships to win the associated newbuilding, consultancy and survey business.

Class societies have competed keenly on fees previously but that is not the case today with the latest generation of ultra large containerships (ULCs).

Lloyd’s Register marine director Tom Boardley, speaking to TradeWinds at the class society’s new Southampton-based research and technology complex, said the issues of fees is no longer as significant considering the millions of dollars of potential savings from fuel-efficiency initiatives.
