The nephew of Greek shipowner George Economou has been paid a $2m “sign on bonus” to fill a newly created role as executive vice-president of DryShips.
The payment is described in DryShips’ newly filed annual report, which also says Anthony Kandylidis is to receive $550,000 in base salary.
Kandylidis is a veteran of Economou’s private shipmanagement companies. Since June 2012, he has served as executive vice-president of Oslo-listed Ocean Rig UDW, Economou’s drillships operation.
