The move could mean that recycling facilities in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan will become increasingly marginalised, as the EC has strongly hinted that under its newly agreed scrapping regulation, it will not accept yards that do not operate from a non-permeable structure.

The EC is currently inviting applications from yards to be included in its list of approved facilities.

The ECSA’s Patrick Verhoeven said: “We call on all shipowners to act in good faith and draw up plans to recycle their ships in a socially responsible and transparent way.
